Trent Ricky Smith, 60, passed away into God’s loving arms on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Centennial Medical Center Midtown after a valiant battle with graft-versus-host disease, surrounded by his devoted family.
Known fondly as Ricky, he was the youngest of nine children, born on April 7, 1965, to Nettie Alexander and Robert Smith in Murfreesboro, TN. A member of Key Memorial UMC from a very young age, Ricky had an unyielding trust in God and shared his faith through the love he freely gave to those he encountered. He graduated from Oakland High School in 1985 and later earned an associate degree from High Tech Institute in 2005.
Early in life, Ricky met Trina Lawrence, high school sweetheart and lifelong partner. He was blessed with 44 years of friendship, love, and companionship with Trina, including 34 beautiful years of marriage. Together, they proudly raised two sons, Ricky and Tyrus, who affectionately called their father Big Rick.
A dedicated and hardworking man, Ricky spent much of his career as a reach truck operator. He worked for several companies over the years, including more than eight years with Home Depot.
Ricky was a proud and passionate Pittsburgh Steelers fan and was rarely seen without wearing black and gold to represent his team. He loved watching sports, grilling for his family, eating meatloaf or a well-cooked porterhouse steak, and spreading kindness everywhere he went—most often with a sense of humor. Ricky was wholeheartedly present for those he loved, always ready with a helping hand, a witty remark, and a warm smile.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Smith and Nettie Alexander.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Trina Smith; his children, Ricky (Danielle) Lawrence and Tyrus Smith; his granddaughter, Jaylen Lawrence; his sisters, Mary Davis and Deborah Russell; and his brothers, John (Barbara) Alexander, Robert (Laura) Alexander, Herbert (Kathy) Alexander, George (Annie) Alexander, Terry Alexander; his cherished big brother, Paul (Cheryl) Smith; his devoted cousins, Mary Ann Smith and Cassie Porter; his numerous nieces, nephews; a host of cousins and friends and the Lawrence family.
