Robert Turner Stokes, a native of Alexandria, TN, was born to the late Turner Stokes and Hattie Margaret Stokes on July 25, 1936.   He professed love and hope in Jesus Christ at an early age in Alexandria, TN and was a member of Allen Chapel AME Church.  Robert transitioned Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital.

He attended Wilson County High School and entered the United States Navy in 1954.  He completed basic training in San Diego, CA serving in the Far East (FECOM) and earned his associate degree in arts from Los Angeles Southwest College.

Robert had his work career with the National Lining Co. of California and retired after 40+ years of service as VP of operations.   He had two sisters and two brothers who preceded him in death.  He also had a very special bond with his deceased niece Rosa Stokes, who was very active in the field of basketball, playing and coaching.

He leaves to cherish his memory, a devoted wife of 20 years, Bessie Batey-Stokes; daughter, Deidre Stokes Seyler; step-daughters, Terri (Joe) Bryson and Sherri Batey (Calvin Hunt); one sister, Margaret (John) Johnson; one brother, Thomas (Eula) Stokes; three sisters-in-law, Florence Smith, Katie Wilson and Shirley Wilson; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins, which he was called “Papa” by the grandchildren.
