Margaret Stewart, age 88, departed this earthly life for eternal rest at home on Wednesday, December 8, 2021.  She resided in Shelbyville, Tennessee.

Born on January 25, 1933, she was the 10th of thirteen children born to the late Earnest and Myrtle Johnson in Unionville, Tennessee.

She graduated as Valedictorian from Bedford County Training School and later attended Tennessee State University.  She worked and retired from American National Can Company after 30 years.

She was a lifetime member of Woodfork Chapel A.M.E. Church, Shelbyville, TN and accepted Christ at age 13.  As a member, she was  active in the Women’s Missionary Society, the Lay Organization, the Choir, Sunday School, Christian Education, and Steward Board.

Upon exhibiting a lively relationship with Christ and exemplary service to the church, Sister Stewart was set apart by Bishop Vashti McKenzie for higher service as she was consecrated a Deaconess.  This distinction recognized her as one of the “Holy Women” in the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

She was preceded in death by the children’s father, Wilson (Bill) Stewart, and eleven siblings, Lee V. Johnson, Sam R. Johnson, Robert B. Johnson, J. Morris Johnson, Joe Louis Johnson, Allean F, Kendrick, Mary L. Smith, Maggie D. Davis, Deloris Johnson, Essie H. Gresham, and Jennice Sanders.

She leaves to cherish her memories a loving and devoted daughter, Bonita Stewart, and two loving sons, Thomas Stewart and Terrell Stewart, all of Shelbyville, Tennessee; a grandson, Barry (Jasmine) Stewart; two great grandchildren, Jonathan and Madison Stewart; one sister, Theresa Burrage of Dayton, Ohio; one sister in law, Lula Mae Jordan of Shelbyville, Tennessee; along with a host of nieces and nephews.
