He was baptized into Christ at an early age.  A devoted Christian serving as a teacher, song leader and a dedicated steward at The Johnson Road Church of Christ, which he helped in the architect, the design and construction of the building.  He was a major factor in the growth of the congregation, which eventually relocated and was renamed Hwy 231 Church of Christ, where he continued his faithful journey with Christ until death.

Roy Mitchell Smotherman, attended Public School through the 8th grade; he served his country in the U.S. Navy where he retired with an honorable discharge after sustaining an injury; he worked on the railroads; he retired from the V.A. and began farming cattle for about 6 years with his sons-in-law.  His favorite hobbies were to read and study the Bible, cooking, gardening and fixing lawn mowers until his health declined; then he listened daily to recorded gospel sermons.

A special thanks to Dad’s devoted, dedicated and dependable care giver, Stanley Sharp, who Dad loved dearly as well. The family was so grateful for the love and care he rendered. Also, a special thanks to Bro. & Sis. Ira and Sonya Watkins and fellow Navy Service Comrades, who were devoted in bringing dad supplies and equipment for his needs and care.
