Deacon Isaac Newton Phillips Jr. was born September 1, 1947 to the late Deacon Newt and Mother Bessie Phillips in Rutherford County. He transitioned from this earthly life to eternal life on January 9th, 2016.

At an early age, he united with the Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, TN where he served as a Junior Usher. He later moved his membership to the Little Hope Mission Church (now known as Progressive Primitive Baptist Church) under the pastorship of the founder, the late Elder Johnnie E. Taylor, where he served as a deacon, trustee, assistant treasurer, Sunday School Superintendent, adult Sunday School Teacher, and member of the Senior Ministry. He was elected Treasurer in 1987 and became Chairman of the Deacon Board in 1996. Deacon Phillips was a registered member of Cumberland Association of Primitive Baptist and the National Primitive Baptist Convention, USA. He served faithfully until his death.

Deacon Phillips was a 1965 graduate of Holloway High School, Murfreesboro, TN and he attended Tennessee State University and Draughons Business College, Nashville, TN. He was drafted in the United States Army in 1966 and received honorable discharge in September 1968.

He was a hardworking man who was formerly employed by Chromolox; Aramark; Gordon’s Jewelers; Kay Jewelers; Golden Flakes; & Alexander Ford. At the time of his death, he was on leave from the City of Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation department.

He was an avid athlete and sports fan. It was part of the norm to see Isaac at any ball park, whether playing 2nd base with an all-men team, pitching for a co-ed team, or even behind the plate as the umpire for both youth and adult teams. Baseball, bowling, golf, pool, darts, corn-hole and horseshoes were all activities he loved. He whole-heartedly supported his children and grandchildren in whatever sport they were participating in, regardless of the season. 

Deacon Phillips is survived by his devoted family, wife, Linda F. Phillips; two sons, Isaac N. (Eboni) Phillips III “Tray” & Isaiah N. Phillips; two daughters, Cynthia Wells & Constance (James) Yeargin; seven grandchildren, De’Kaleigha Wells of London, England, UK, DaKyla Wells enlisted United States Navy in Great Lakes, IL, Braden Yeargin, Xavier Phillips, Gabriella Phillips, Brielle Yeargin, & Kloey Phillips; four sisters,  Margaret Taylor, Sallie Howse, Ethel Phillips, & Ida (Rev. James “Tex”) Thomas; three aunts, Mrs. Annie M. Howse, Mrs. Katherine Ellis & Mrs. Lillian Howse; six brothers-in-law; seven sisters-in-law; a very close cousin, Robert Howse; play brother, Min. James Lane; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, too numerous to mention.
