Bro. Ell Taylor “Scoot” Biggers was born in Holtland, Tennessee on April 7, 1929, to the late Ollie & Willie Mae Taylor Biggers. He graduated from Hill Grove Elementary School in Chapel Hill, TN as the Salutorian and graduated from Lewisburg High School as the President of the Class from his freshman to junior year. He moved from Chapel Hill, TN to Shelbyville where he resided until death with his loving wife. In 1950, he married Mattie L. Arnold Biggers, of which, no children were born to this union.

He was a faithful member of the Bird Street church of Christ, whereby, he served as the Trustee and Sunday Bible Class school teacher for several years. He truly loved working for the church and took pride in doing the work for Christ and serving his fellowmen. He was instrumental in engineering the blueprints for the construction of Bird Street church of Christ & the Fellowship Hall.

In additional, Ell T. utilized his time & energy by exploring several various opportunities. He served in the United States Army, including serving oversea in Germany for two years and received an honorable discharge. He was a graduate of the Leadership School of the 101st Airborne in Fort Breckenridge, Ky.

The continuation of his education included graduating from Chicago Technical School with a major in Blueprint Reading and Estimating. He attended MTSU and the University of Tennessee, completing courses in Shop Organization and Management, Construction in Industrial Arts, Student Personnel & Guidance, Safety, and Curriculum Programs. Forty hours over a twelve year period was dedicated to in-service training to upgrade teaching and shop skills. His education and many skills enable him to provide quality service as he became proprietor and CEO of the Biggers’ Main Street EXXON and Repair Shop and the ’76 Service Station and Biggers Trucking Company which operated three tractor and trailer combination business.

Ell T. prepared himself to move into the workforce as he furthered his education and worked as apprentice bricklayer at his father-in-laws’ Masonry company (who was also instrumental in starting Mattie in bricklaying). He later accepted jobs in areas such as Huntsville & Athens, Al, Bowling Green, KY, Nashville, TN, and many other cities. He assisted in building facilities at Western Kentucky University and Vanderbilt University. He taught and retired from the State Area Vocational Technical School as a Masonry Instructor.

Ell T. was certainly not a stranger to the community. He was known as an outstanding civic-minded citizen of Bedford County with an unselfish personality and contribution to the affairs of the community and various civic endeavors. He received a memorandum in recognition for his “Outstanding Leadership in the church and the Community” from Bright Temple Church of God in Christ in year 2010. He was one of the founders of the Shelbyville Club of Frontiers International and served as the Vice President. He also contributed to building the Bedford County Farmers’ Market and received a Resolution from the State of TN – House of Representative by the Speaker of the House, Ned R. McWherter and the Governor, Lamar Alexander. He was later selected as a prime leader of Shelbyville and received another Resolution from the Board of Commissioners of the Shelbyville Housing Authority for becoming instrumental 3 years in a roll of achieving the highest performance in the industry and score 100 on the PHMAP. Ell T. also retired from the Shelbyville Housing Authority as the Certified Maintenance Manager.

Ell T. was a true man of God and a man that seek after God’s own heart. He was a peacemaker, loving and devoted husband, and a great example and outstanding advocate to his nieces and nephews at any time of the night! He loved his family and was always willing to give a helping hand. Preceding him in death: his devoted wife of 68 years, Mattie Lousinda Arnold Biggers, Shelbyville, TN, brothers, Charles, Doyal, and James; one sister, Henrietta Biggers Davison. He also leaves to cherish his memory, a devoted nephew, James (Henrietta) Biggers of Farmington, TN, and brother-in-law, Ora D. Walls of Shelbyville, TN; devoted cousin Annie Pearl (Tom) Smith, other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and the Church Family at the Bird Street Church of Christ.
